South Carolina Women Entrepreneurs: A Status Report

The Authur M. Spiro Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership study, South Carolina Women Entrepreneurs: A Status Report, commissioned by The Alliance for Women, serves as a foundation for the 2007-08 Alliance agenda to increase women's economic autonomy. The report addresses (1) the current status of women-owned firms in SC; (2) a comparison of Sc to other states; and (3) an outline of factors that might explain the differences. The findings, that "women-owned firms in SC are performing differently than women-owned firms in other states, excelling in some areas and trailing in others" will guide initiatives of The Alliance for Women to increase the number of new and the profitability of current women-owned businesses in SC. Look for initiatives in the areas of micro-loan and incubator systems for new entrepreneurs, enhanced support and mentoring for current entrepreneurs and a more aggressive encouragement for women with specific skills to consider starting their own business.
